curiosity – photo critique
once again i find myself posting pictures of the boy. lately i’ve been taking a lot of pictures of what surrounds me. a lot more than i used to. we’re expecting a baby in june so i’ve been doing less assignments to prepare for the birth. this means i have more time to spend with the family and a lot more time to take personal pictures. it’s great: i’m trying out new things, learning, failing and thinking more about composition and storytelling. learning to be a better storyteller with my images is one of the main goals i set for this year. storytelling is the most important thing in photography, it’s very hard to achieve and it’s very often overlooked.
so for this week i want to try something new: i’m asking my audience for feedback. here are two pictures taken at the same time and place but from a different angle. the title is curiosity. which photograph do you like best and why? what do both photographs tell you? which one conveys a stronger message? which composition is better? maybe you hate them both? that’s fine too. what would you have done differently? you don’t have to answer in english. dutch is fine. i’ll buy you a beer if you respond in the comments section!
a bit of info for the gearheads: both images are shot with a canon 5d & 50mm 1.4 lens at f1.4 in aperture priority (shutter speed was 1/800 & 1/600)

Hey Ian,
Altijd welkom in Brussel

To be honest: i don’t know really. For the moment pic a tells most the story in my opinion. But if you had captured a bit more of the (curious?) expression of your boy in pic b, that definately would have been the winner. Emotion works best in close-up.
On the other hand, imagine a shade – of whatever it might be – reflecting through the fence in pic a…

I also prefer the first image. You can see the boy looking through the fence, while the touch in the second image does not reflect that feeling to me.
But that’s a personal preference of course, and both images are technically very well done!

ZO SCHATTIG!!! Echt mooi ventje zeg…
